FOR INTERNET BEGINNERS...

The internet is like a virtual worldwide library you can access over your computer. Web sites are like the books in that library. A search engine (such as Yahoo!, Hotbot, or AOLSearch, etc.) allows you to type in search words, serving as a virtual librarian directing you to a section of the web with sites pertaining to your topic of interest...
The World Wide Web is a collection of web pages located on various host computers displayed over live connections to browser programs just like the one you are using now to see this web page. What makes it a "web" is that these web pages communicate the information desired by their authors, and also they enable readers to jump to other resources by way of links. The links in Web pages you click on can refer to another web page, a program, or some other kind of file on the Web. By means of telephone connections and even including orbital satellites, on the net you can see and get information instantly that would otherwise take you very expensive phone calls, faxes, and travel.
Search Engines are a first stop for people who "surf" the web. If there is a news story they want to find out more about, they type in the key words and let the search engine lead them to dozens of stories to find out more. Interested in a product, like a certain type of fishing pole? Type in the brand name and the city you are in and find out more about pricing and where to go to demo it. Have a computer question? Go to Microsoft's web site and grab a computer program to update or diagnose your situation. Medical, technical, educational and fun, the web universe has it all and more!
